ENG: George Washington (February 22, 1732 – December 14, 1799) was the dominant military and political leader of the new United States of America from 1775 to 1799. He led the American victory over Great Britain in the American Revolutionary War as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army in 1775–1783, and presided over the writing of the Constitution in 1787. The unanimous choice to serve as the first President of the United States (1789–1797), Washington presided over the creation of a strong, well-financed national government that stayed neutral in the wars raging in Europe, suppressed rebellion and won acceptance among Americans of all types. His leadership style established many forms and rituals of government that have been used ever since, such as using a ...

President Washington: The Power and the Glory

April 23, 2011 By Bruce Kauffmann/For the Appeal-Democrat Our first president, George Washington, was inaugurated this week (April 30) in 1789, in great part because his countrymen knew they could trust him with power. They knew this because they knew of his ambivalence about wielding it. After the American Revolution was won and all the power he could have wanted was his for the taking, Washington resigned his military command and went home. Duty had called, he had answered, and now he only wanted to return to his beloved Mount Vernon to resume life as a gentleman planter. But power ...

Jeho Excelence George Washington

Joseph J. Ellis napsal zásadní životopis, který představuje nejdůležitější – a zároveň tu nejméně chápanou – postavu americké historie, George Washingtona, v plné šíři a se všemi spornými body… Kniha Jeho Excelence George Washington Joseph Ellis vychází z nově zkatalogizovaných Washingtonových písemností z University of Virginia a kreslí Washingtonův portrét, v němž najdeme celý život a ...

Founding Father featured in popular new video game
McLEAN, Va. (AP) – Wars and video games seem to go together like peanut butter and jelly. But those games usually involve tanks and machine guns and Tet offensives; not horses, bayonets and Bunker Hill. [...]

Wikiquote and many other sites list this quote: Make the most of the Indian hemp seed, and sow it everywhere! George Washington in a note to his gardener at Mount Vernon (1794), The Writings of George Washington, Volume 33, page 270 (Library of Congress). I couldn't find that volume or page on the Internet.

The latest gun advocacy rhetoric I've seen includes this quote, attributed to George Washington: When any nation mistrusts its citizens with guns it is sending a clear message. It no longer trusts its citizens because such a government has evil plans. Did George Washington really say this? I can find plenty of people citing him with this quotation, but nothing that looks like a legitimate source (mostly personal blogs and opinion pieces). It doesn't really sound like the phrasing I would expect him to use.
Washington's copy of Constitution goes on display
MOUNT VERNON, Va. (AP) – After buying it at auction for nearly $10 million, George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate is displaying the Founding Father’s annotated copy of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. The Mount [...]
